Repairability outweighs the competition

Modular design hits the market

Fairphone launched the Fairbuds 2 in Europe on October 14, 2026, specifically to coincide with the global observance known as International E-Waste Day. This launch arrives just before the February 2027 European battery regulation takes effect for portable devices. The earbuds use seven replaceable parts, including both batteries in the earpieces and the charging case. You can also replace the outer shell or a single earbud if you lose one, which matters if you are tired of buying new sets every time a single bud fails. The Fairbuds 2 use a glue-free design and provide a three-year warranty to challenge the disposable culture that dominates the wireless audio market today. This second-generation model follows the original Fairbuds from 2021 and the Fairbuds XL headphones. While the original Fairbuds launched at €149, the new version costs €119 in Europe and $119 in the US. US buyers can expect the product to arrive on November 2, 2026. This purchase includes a 14-day trial period for testing. The XL headphones allow for component replacement, such as the ear cushions and headband base.

Performance and specifications

The Fairbuds 2 include 11mm titanium drivers and support LDAC at up to 990 kbps. This audio capability allows for higher bitrates than the previous model, which only supported SBC and AAC. The earbuds use Bluetooth 6.0, which allows for multipoint connectivity to two devices simultaneously. I find the 45 dB noise reduction effective, though some users in the community reported software issues with ANC in windy conditions. The hardware is 37% smaller than the previous generation. The charging case adds 20 hours of playback, which brings the total to 28 hours if you count the 8 hours from the buds alone. The tuning for these buds came from the Rotterdam-based studio Form Follows Frequency. The companion app provides a five-band equalizer and access to firmware updates. The earbuds include three microphones each and capacitive touch controls.

Feature Fairbuds 2 Detail

The Fairbuds 2 have an IP54 rating for dust and moisture. The XL headphones provide 24-bit sound wirelessly with aptX HD codec compatibility and use 40mm dynamic drivers. The Fairbuds 2 compete with the Apple AirPods Max in the sustainability space, but they cost significantly less than many flagship options.

Materials and manufacturing

Fairphone uses 49% fair or recycled materials for the Fairbuds 2. This includes 70% post-consumer recycled plastic and 100% recycled tin in the solder paste. The company uses recycled rare earth elements in the magnets and 100% fair copper via Cobalt Credits. For every pair sold, Fairphone collects and recycles a weight of electronic waste equal to the weight of the units sold. This e-waste neutral approach targets the growing demand for minerals like nickel, zinc, indium, silver, and cobalt. The Fairbuds XL headphones include 92% recycled aluminum and 100% fair gold. While the Fairbuds XL design allows for part replacement, some users reported that the headband arms snap after several months of use. The Fairbuds 2 use PFAS-free skin-contact materials for comfort. The manufacturing process uses 100% renewable energy to lower emissions and supports factory workers with living wages. The company invests in Gold Standard climate projects to reduce CO2 emissions. They also provide Fairmined silver via credits to ensure ethical sourcing. Will the Fairbuds 2 hinge prove more durable than the XL design?
