Starlink dominance and T-Mobile
I view SpaceX as the current leader in the direct-to-cell market. T-Mobile customers account for 70.8% of all active Starlink D2D connections. The T-Satellite service launched in July 2025 using Starlink’s V2 satellites. It works with most Android and iOS smartphones released in the last four years. In Los Angeles County, users frequently connect from the Angeles National Forest. On October 12, 2026, unconfirmed reports regarding a Starlink direct-to-cell spectrum milestone caused T-Mobile shares to suffer their worst single-day decline on record before retail investors aggressively bought the dip to recover losses. T-Mobile subscribers on the $100 per month Experience Beyond plan receive this service for free. Other users pay $10 monthly. During the Los Angeles wildfires in early 2025, T-Satellite delivered over 250,000 messages to people in need. The service grew from a beta test with 2 million signups and 30,000 daily users. US Mobile also partners with Starlink to provide integrated satellite and mobile telephony for $50. US Mobile has not clarified if customers receive a compact antenna as a bundle or a separate purchase. Starlink residential plans include a 100 Mbps tier for $55 and a 200 Mbps tier for $85. Starlink Roam provides a 100GB plan for $55 and a 300GB plan for $80. Starlink Roam also includes a $175 per month unlimited data option.
Amazon Leo targets Starlink
Amazon Leo poses a massive financial challenge to Starlink. Amazon signed a deal in April 2026 to acquire Globalstar for $11.57 billion. This acquisition provides Amazon with 24 operational satellites and licensed L-band and S-band spectrum. Amazon offered Globalstar shareholders $90 per share in cash or stock. Amazon Leo intends to power satellite services for iPhone and Apple Watch models. This arrangement replaces the previous Globalstar-powered safety features. Amazon’s plan for the future includes three performance tiers: an ultra compact model up to 100 Mbps, a standard model at 400 Mbps, and an enterprise system reaching 1 Gbps. Amazon aims to undercut Starlink on price. Because Amazon Leo satellites orbit at 500 kilometers, they deliver 40% less power to antennas than the Starlink satellites at 400 kilometers. Amazon’s planned constellation includes 3,236 satellites, while Starlink already has over 6,000. Recent demonstrations for Amazon Leo showed speeds of 1,280 Mbps for enterprise customers.
| Provider | Satellite Altitude | Planned Constellation |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink | 400 km | 6,000+ |
| Amazon Leo | 500 km | 3,236 |
Carrier competition
AST SpaceMobile maintains partnerships with AT&T and Verizon to counter SpaceX. This provider targets commercial satellite-to-smartphone launches in 2026. Legacy provider HughesNet filed for bankruptcy after it lost customers to Starlink. SpaceX plans to use small cellular base stations alongside residential Starlink installations to create local coverage. This hybrid approach combines Starlink broadband receivers with cellular transmitters to reach indoor areas. SpaceX is already deploying Starlink V3 satellites to support these goals. In September 2026, SpaceX launched 26 Starlink V3 satellites during its 14th Starship test flight. These V3 satellites are too large for Falcon 9 rockets. SpaceX accounts for approximately 85% of U.S. orbital launches in 2025. The provider targets a market of 411 million users and $12 billion in revenue by 2030. You should monitor the Starlink app for actual service changes rather than following market volatility. Can SpaceX convince device makers to support its unique spectrum?
