Canva’s $42 billion valuation and the AI economics reality

Canva reached a $42 billion valuation following a 43% revenue growth to $4 billion in 2025. The company is pivoting toward internal AI models to reduce serving costs by 90% while competing with Adobe through its free Affinity suite offering.

Canva's $42 billion valuation and the AI economics reality

The cost of scaling intelligence

Canva’s August 2025 employee stock sale set a $42 billion valuation, which is a significant increase from the $32 billion reported in October 2024. I see the 43% growth from $2.8 billion in 2024 to $4 billion in 2025 as the driver. This happened after seven straight years of profitability. However, I find the recent pivot toward owning internal models necessary because the cost of serving AI tasks grew too high. Melanie Perkins noted that the company had to rebuild to cut costs by 90%. I question if the company can maintain these margins. The company also received $25 million from Robinhood Ventures in June 2026. The B2B segment grew to over $500 million in annual recurring revenue. This B2B segment has 500,000 teams from companies such as Intel and Zoom. I observe that investor demand for Canva shares runs below available supply at a ratio of 0.7 to 1, meaning more holders want out than buyers want in at the current price. If you are an accredited investor, you should recognize that everything trading now is secondary, so you are negotiating with a seller who has their own reasons for getting out. This follows a 2024 secondary sale that valued the company at $25 billion.

Visual Suite 2.0 and agentic workflows

The October launch of Visual Suite 2.0 introduces the Canva Design Model, which the company calls the first AI model trained on design complexity. This system powers Video 2.0, Canva Sheets, and Canva Forms. The platform connects to Gmail, Slack, and Zoom to automate workflows. I note the 265 million monthly active users now access tools like Canva Grow, which uses AI to scan websites and generate ad variants. The platform enables users to work across any format, from presentations to spreadsheets, within a single design. Users can generate images, edit content, or use the 3D Content Generator for dimension.

Feature Canva Enterprise Plan
Brand Kits 1000 kits with tiered approvals
Support Priority support and dedicated success manager
AI Access 400 uses of Premium AI tools
Security SSO and SCIM provisioning

Canva’s B2B segment alone exceeded $500 million in annual recurring revenue. The company also provides an AI Pass add-on for users to increase usage limits. These users can access up to 400 uses of Premium AI tools or 40 uses of Ultra AI tools depending on the plan. I see that the new Video 2.0 has a timeline editor to help users sync and trim footage. The platform also includes Canva Email Design.

Adobe competition and the Affinity move

Canva’s move to make the Affinity suite free on October 30, 2025, creates a direct challenge to Adobe’s subscription model. One million users signed up for the free Affinity tools in four days. Adobe shares lost 33.71% of their value over the last 52 weeks as competition from AI startups increased. I observe that Adobe Express still holds an advantage for professionals because it syncs Photoshop and Illustrator files as linked assets. I would skip the Canva Enterprise plan if your primary workflow requires deep integration with professional desktop software. Demand remains low. I find that Adobe’s stock suffered a significant drop after its sales outlook missed expectations, especially as generative AI tools like Sora emerged to threaten its dominance in the creative tools market. The company reported $5.99 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2025, which is 10% growth. Is the high cost of AI serving a permanent drag on Canva’s ability to scale?
